Weathering With You

Similarities – Characters & Action

Bubble was praised for its incredible animation and handling of weather. Weathering With You doubles down on Bubble on all those fronts by giving fans well-rounded characters, a rich plot, and a excellent soundtrack. Both anime feature weather-related disasters occurring in a Tokyo setting and directly link those circumstances to their female lead characters. Weathering With You also features breathtakingly animated scenery and develops its characters well within its romance-driven storyline. This anime follows the meeting between Hodaka Morishima: a runaway high school turned small-time publisher worker, and an orphan girl named Hina Amano. The two decide to run away together after Hodaka saves Hina from shady individuals. During their time together, he learns that Hina can call out the sun whenever she prays for it. Hodaka see’s the potential in Hina’s gift and declares that she should become a “sunshine girl,” tasked with clearing the sky for people in need of it. Although things turn out bright for them, they’ll later learn of the consequences with tampering with the weather.

Air Gear

Similarities – Sports-Like Atmosphere

Air Gear is a hidden gem regarding sports anime. It features a great variety of fleshed-out characters and a charming and atmospheric world. It also has great comedic gags that’ll get a chuckle out of anyone. Although it doesn’t have the best animation by today’s standards, it holds up quite well and should please many fans of acrobatics and sports. On the other hand, it doesn’t lean toward romance or drama. Instead, fans can expect for the series to be wonderfully paced, as this helps the anime gradually develop its characters and their world. However, it does feature a few romantic gags like nose bleeds and hyped-up male characters. Those looking for a more comedic approach to acrobatic sports should turn their attention over to Air Gear. Air Gear takes place in a metropolitan city where Air Trecks, motorized incline skates, are taking the world by storm. It follows our main protagonist, Itsuki Minami. He’s a delinquent middle school student who gets into fights with just about everyone he meets. That all changes when he finds a mysterious pair of Air Trecks in his house. Alongside his friends Kazuma and Onigiri, Itsuki hopes to become the ruler of the skies.

Your Name

Similarities – Gorgeous Animation & Romance Storyline

Your Name was a popular anime film when it was released. It featured breathtaking animation coupled with an outstanding musical score. The characters in the film are well-developed and have likable personalities. Both anime center themselves around an astronomical phenomenon and contain slight supernatural elements. While both harbor some romantic elements, Your Name offers a better payoff. Furthermore, you establish a stronger connection with the characters in this film, unlike Bubble. Otherwise, Your Name follows a slightly similar premise and ends off with a well-deserved and satisfying conclusion. Your Name follows Mitsuha Miyamizu, who wants to escape her country lifestyle by moving to the bustling city of Tokyo. In Tokyo, we also meet Taki Tachibana, the film’s other protagonist, who aims for a bright future in architecture. One day, these two wake up in each other’s bodies. Therefore, the anime focuses on Mitsuha and Taki’s quest to uncover the reason behind their body swapping. However, they’ll soon learn of a darker threat lurking behind the scenes.

Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop

Similarities – Beautiful Animation & Engaging Art Style

Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop features breathtaking visuals that are more charming and colorful than its title. It features an interesting cast of characters and some well-designed environments that’ll calm anyone’s nerves. The character’s designs and reactions they have toward their environment feel fluid and realistic. Unfortunately, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop’s narrative doesn’t strike as something unique. It’s more in line with what you’d expect from a typical slice-of-life anime. It features a predictable plot that’s easy to put together once you’re halfway done with the anime. However, its characters are fascinating enough to warrant your time spent watching the film. This film follows Yui Sakura, an aspiring poet who works at a welfare facility. He later meets Yuki Hoshino, an influence who ends up working at the same facility as he does. These two would encounter a senile man named Fujiyama, who is searching for an old vinyl record. He asks them to hunt down the record before his memories fade away. And so their quest for the missing record begins.

Made In Abyss

Similarities – Gorgeous Environments & Tone

At first glance, Made In Abyss doesn’t share anything in common with Bubble. It’s a series that delves into darker topics and places its characters in a world rich in fantasy. The anime also depicts humans of all ages in harsh and heartbreaking conditions. If all that’s the case, where do Made In Abyss and Bubble share common ground? I’d argue in their animation, world, and tone (to some degree). Both Made In Abyss and Bubble offer stunning visuals that’ll wow and shock fans. The environments in both anime are well-designed. They promote this sense of wonder and intrigue concerning. The tone of both series often shifts regarding the environments the characters find themselves in. To some degree, both anime characterize their environments to the point where they feel like characters themselves. Although Made In Abyss’s tone tends to shift whenever it introduces darker story content, both inhibit this sense of awe and discovery. If you’re looking for a series that features a rich mysterious world with likable main characters, than watch Made In Abyss.

Josee And The Tiger Fish

Similarities – Unique Spin On The Little Mermaid Narrative

Josee and the Tiger Fish follows Tsueno Suzukawa and his attempt to juggle his part-time work to earn enough money to study abroad. However, his career path takes a detour when he meets a mysterious girl in a wheelchair named Josee. Josee’s grandmother offers Tsuneo a job as Josee’s new caretaker, and he humbly accepts. Although she annoys him a lot, Tsuneo learns that the job pays wonderfully. As they spend time with one another, they start to understand the reason behind each other’s attitudes toward things. Tsuneo learns that Josee’s behavior terms from her wanting to traverse the outside world without being burdened by her wheelchair. Therefore, the anime follows the growing bond between Josee and Tsuneo. Like Bubble, Josee and the Tiger Fish is a retelling of the classic Little Mermaid story. Both anime offer a unique approach toward that narrative, yet Josee and the Tiger Fish nails it down better. This is because the story sets up multiple heartbreaking obstacles for these characters to climb over. You’ll see them struggle and feel defeated by the events they endure. However, the anime promotes this feeling of hope regarding its characters’ efforts to hop over those detrimental hurdles. Josee and the Tiger Fish’s animation is also fluid and beautiful. The character’s designs are also a delight, along with visuals for their world’s environments and structures.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Similarities – Romance

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a fascinating romance narrative. It features well-developed characters, engaging dialogue, and an intriguing take on time travel. The way this anime utilizes time travel is identical to how Bubble’s director utilizes its phenomenon. Both phenomena steer the plot in the direction of the romance blossoming between its main characters. The romance between the characters in both films feels natural. Bubble’s animation is a bit more fluid and vibrant, though. The visuals in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time aren’t as mesmerizing and beautiful as what you’d find in Bubble. Furthermore, the music is basic and doesn’t really hold a candle to Bubble’s OST. However, the character designs are unique enough to warrant some intrigue. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is about a girl named Makoto Konno. She’s struggling to find her purpose in life and doesn’t know what career to pursue once she completes high school. During her inner quarrels, Makoto finds herself in a life-changing bind after she collides with an oncoming vehicle. After the event, she learns she can travel through time. The film follows Makoto playing around with her powers and discovering why it’s not wise to tamper with time.

Ponyo

Similarities – Themes

Ponyo isn’t as discussed enough as Studio Ghibli’s other works. It doesn’t feature terrible storytelling or bland characters. For some reason, it always gets overshadowed by mainstream Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. This is unfortunate considering how charming its world and characters are. For instance, Ponyo’s plot is free of complexity and chooses to tell its story at a slow pace. While this may be off-putting to some, the slow pacing allows the film to take time to flesh out its characters. It also examines the friendship between two unlikely companions who come from different worlds. Like Bubble, this film utilizes it’s a film that utilizes its characters’ separate lifestyles to tell a tale of friendship and goodwill. Both films even have one individual that tries to tear away the beautiful bond these individuals establish together. Unfortunately, both films leave you with a few unanswered questions. However, they leave you with an experience that you’ll never forget.

Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind

Similarities – One-Dimensional Characters & Captivating Worlds

Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind is a Studio Ghibli film that doesn’t get enough praise for what it offers. It features well-rounded characters, a frivolous plot, and a stunning world. The animation doesn’t come close to what you’d find in films like Bubble, but it looks wonderful compared to the other anime films that were released during said period. At the same time, Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind offers an unusual plot. Likewise, the film offers multiple different sub-plots and tries to tackle each of them within its run time. These sub-plots involve politics, poisonous forests, and weapons to destroy the forests. There’s a strong environmentalist message attached to the film that’s pieced together wonderfully. As for the film’s characters, you can expect them to follow specific archetypes. These archetypes include concepts like the resourceful young heroine, the wise elder, the courageous side-kick, and others. Like Bubble, these characters don’t get much character development. They mainly stick to their guns and remain one-noted. However, their actions in the film should leave viewers feeling entertained enough to look past their cliches.

A Silent Voice

Similarities – Romance

Your Name soared so A Silent Voice could later fly alongside it. A Silent Voice is a captivating film that delves into depressing themes like sorrow and depression. It also covers harsher topics like bullying and its effects on people. The characters in this film are full of life and have reltable traits that hit hard with its audience. Unlike Bubble, A Silent Voice takes it time to gradually develop its protagonists and side characters. Many of whom, will gain a change of heart while others will stick-to-the-script. A Silent Voice’s animated scenes are on par with what you’d find in Bubble. They’re not as vibrant, though. Instead, these scenes are meant to evoke strong feelings of comfort and angst–when the time calls for that. Bubble and A Silent Voice also feature a romance between two characters from different walks of life. Uta and Hibiki’s relationship takes not of their different backgrounds more literally, though. However, the bond between the main characters in A Silent Voice feels more personal and charming. It also leads to the male character getting some of the best character-progression in the film. If you’re looking for another anime that offers a compelling romance storyline and isn’t afraid to tackle depressing topics, check out A Silent Voice.
