What is The Sandman about?
For those unaware of what The Sandman is, the title refers to the King of Dreams himself, Dream. He goes by many names, including Morpheus and Lord of Dreaming. The story begin with Dream captured and held prisoner by an occult for 70 years. Unfortunately in doing so, many people fall victim to a sleeping virus and can’t wake up. When Dream does inevitably escape, he sets out to get his possessions back, avenging himself against his captors and rebuilding his Kingdom. But a lot has changed in 70+ years – can Dream change right along with it? Or is he destined to fall prey to the passing of time and be left behind? Making this journey all the more difficult is The Corinthian, an escaped nightmare that has absolutely no intention of following Dream and is intent on carving his own place in this world. We have ongoing coverage of The Sandman across the site, including our ending explained article. You can check that out HERE.
Has The Sandman been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, The Sandman has been renewed for a second season. Given the ending though, that’s perhaps not a surprise but it still took a while for Netflix to come to this decision. Generally Netflix gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars) Other times, it can take months before Netflix make a decision over a show’s future. The Sandman has had a really positive reception from both critics and audiences alike, with many liking that this sticks to the source material. Based on these positive aspects, it’s great to see The Sandman given the nod for another series.
What we know about season 2 so far:
Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point, given Netflix have only just green-lit a sequel. The conclusion does open things up for a follow-up though, especially if the cast decide to return and expand this story. Expect the next two volumes to be adapted, with more thought provoking tales and ideas woven across an expansive story that will likely focus Lucifer and Desire much more heavily.
