I Will Survive
As these episodes are released weekly on AppleTV, do be aware of spoilers within each recap! Another day, another chance; episode 2 of Little Voice begins with Bess walking the dogs and returning to Miss Grant’s house. Given she isn’t in, Bess takes the opportunity to play her piano. This comes to an abrupt end though and Bess hops over to visiting Louie. Thankfully Louie’s words of wisdom are enough for her to head back to the bar and continue working just as before. Midway through her shift, Benny arrives excitedly and reveals he’s managed to bag her a paying gig. Bess is admittedly nervous and asks her Father for advice on “banter” up on stage. He instead tells her she needs to let the music do the talking. Ignoring his advice, Bess starts practicing her introduction in the mirror before eventually running into Ethan who tries to explain himself regarding his girlfriend. Before he can elaborate however, Samuel arrives and tells her she needs to keep quiet on stage and not go off the deep end. Once the applause dies down on stage, Bess ignores all the advice given across the episode and starts engaging with the audience. However, Samuel thankfully drowns out her voice with guitar strums. It’s a wise move too and she finally starts singing properly. The gig is a big success and Bess manages to get through the song without sabotaging herself. After completing their song, they head out together and start busking in the street, which is where the episode ends. With Bess ignoring all the advice from everyone around her, it’s a good thing Samuel was looking out for her and started strumming his guitar. The song itself was okay but given the crux of drama early on has been built around her stage fright, is that it now? Bess has performed infront of people and conquered her fears so it’s difficult to know where the big conflict is coming from. For now Little Voice continues to tick along smoothly, even if there are a few bumps in the road that feel like this could easily derail at any moment.
