Permanent Employment

With a meeting upcoming on Friday, episode 4 of Love & Anarchy begins with Ronny speaking to Sofie about the wording they should use for their letter. Sofie will be chairing this meeting and tells him StreamUs are the future of the company now. He laughs nervously and leaves it up to her to sort out. When Ronny leaves, Sofie messages Max and gives him his next task – land permanent employment by Friday. This brings him before Ronny, asking to work there full time. His first attempt is unfortunately a bit of a dud. He’s determined to prove himself though, heading in the following day wearing a suit… which also doesn’t work. Instead, he decides to try and connect with him on a more personal level, sending his flat-mate out as a mugger in disguise. This man spins a story about not having permanent employment as the reason he’s like this. Ronny is smart though and figures out what’s going on, listening as this guy pleads with him to hire Max. It seems to do the trick too and Max receives the good news in Ronny’s office. In his euphoric state, he heads outside and immediately kisses Sofie on the lips. She’s beside herself with shock and starts brushing her teeth before heading to the school. There, she’s shown everything wrong with the school system as Isabell is questioned by the teachers over her social impact with the other students. She’s concerned that Isabell spends so much time on her own and believes she should be socializing more rather than reading in the library. Back at work, Max gives Sofie her new task for the day – walking backwards. It’s actually pretty funny and she shows up at the big meeting pacing backward and forward. The company have implemented a hiring freeze and it’s obviously been sold… to StreamUs. Friedrich is obviously not happy and he heads into his office in the aftermath of this, where he and Denise disagree over what’s happening. Even worse, Sofie suggests they should reveal the big news at the upcoming book fair. Sofie stays true to her word though and continues to walk backwards all day, including at home where Johan is none too happy with her “weird” and “silly” games.

The Episode Review

With tensions mounting between Sofie and Johan, it seems only a matter of time before Sofie and Max get romantically involved. It’s something that’s been building up across the season and I’d imagine we’ll see this materialize sooner rather than later. Elsewhere, the small but important scene with the school highlights the problems with modern day academics. So what if Isabell is spending all her time in the library? If she wants to read and get into socializing later in life surely that’s not a problem is it? Her grades are good and she’s academically sound so it feels like making a mountain out of a molehill. With StreamUs buying out the rights to Lund though, it’ll be interesting to see how the company evolves and grows over time.
