There have been lots of movies featuring robot companions of course, but even within this concept, there is another difference – Charles has been made out of junkyard parts, including a washing machine and a mannequin head, instead of any high-tech materials and complicated wiring. As such, he really shouldn’t exist as a living being but somehow he does! Welcome to the crazy world of Brian, a lonely inventor, and Charles, his washing machine robot! If you have seen the movie and enjoyed its quirky humour, you might be interested in a sequel. But will we see Brian and Charles again? Or have we now seen the last of them? Here’s what we know:

Be warned, there will be spoilers!!

What is Brian and Charles about?

As I explained in the opening of this article, Brian and Charles is about an inventor and the robot he creates out of the bits and pieces he finds in his shed. When Charles miraculously comes alive after a lightning storm (although Brian believes Charles was activated when a mouse inadvertently fixed Charles’s faulty wiring) the two become firm friends. Trouble arises when a local family catch sight of Charles and decide they want him for themselves. They abduct Charles, take him back to their farm, and use him as their slave. It’s up to Brian and his potential girlfriend Hazel to rescue the robot before he faces a fate much worse than years of servitude to a bullying Welsh clan.

Will there be a Brian and Charles 2?

At the time of writing, a sequel to Brian and Charles has not been announced. This is hardly surprising as the story came to a natural end with a credits sequence that gave us a glimpse of Charles’ life after parting ways with his creator. As such, you shouldn’t expect to see a follow-up movie any time soon. This doesn’t mean it will never happen but as there doesn’t seem to be any mention of a sequel online (let us know if you discover something different), it could be assumed that there are no immediate plans for another feature-length movie featuring the Welsh inventor and his tinpot creation.

What could Brian and Charles 2 be about?

If there is a sequel, the movie could follow Charles’ life after he parted ways from Brian. As you will know if you have seen the first movie, Charles’s dreams came true when Brian bought him an around-the-world ticket so he could explore his dream destinations, including Honolulu where Charles wanted to Hula dance on the beach! The sequel could also see the unlikely couple team up again if Charles returned home to be reunited with his creator. We would likely spend more time with Brian and Hazel too, as their relationship started to become more romantic moments before the end credits rolled on the first movie. This is just speculation as we aren’t convinced a sequel will happen. But if you would like to spend more time with Brian and Charles, you could check out the short film on which the movie was based.

When could Brian and Charles 2 be released?

As the movie wouldn’t need a lot of effects work – any piece of scrap from a junkyard will seemingly do – the movie could be fast-tracked into production, so we could see a sequel within the next couple of years. But as there is no official word suggesting a sequel, we shouldn’t get our hopes up. If you are disappointed about the lack of sequel news, you could cheer yourself up with a creation of your own. If you have an old washing machine sitting in your shed, as well as a mannequin head and some old curtains to dress your makeshift robot up in, you could have your very own companion. Whether or not it will move or speak will depend on a bolt of lightning or a cheeky mouse that accidentally brings your makeshift creation into being.
